Weather of Bhutan
Bhutan is a year-round travel destination with four distinct seasons: Spring (March–May), Summer (June–August), Autumn (September–November), and Winter (December–February). However, spring and autumn are considered the best times to visit due to the pleasant weather, clear mountain views, and vibrant festivals.
Places to visit
Bhutan offers a wide range of cultural, spiritual, and natural attractions that showcase its unique heritage and breathtaking landscapes. From ancient monasteries to scenic mountain passes, every destination provides a memorable experience:
- Memorial Chorten – A sacred Buddhist stupa in Thimphu built in memory of the Third King of Bhutan, symbolizing peace and prosperity.
- Dochula Pass – A high-altitude mountain pass at 3,100 meters, famous for panoramic Himalayan views and 108 stupas.
- Buddha Dordenma – A giant Buddha statue overlooking Thimphu, one of the largest in the world at 51.5 meters tall.

- Centenary Farmers Market – Thimphu’s vibrant local market, showcasing fresh produce, handicrafts, and local life.
- Simtokha Dzong – One of Bhutan’s oldest fortresses, built in 1629 and rich in historical and religious significance.
Each destination reflects Bhutan’s deep cultural roots, natural beauty, and peaceful way of life.
Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) – Bhutan
Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a daily tourism levy introduced to support the country’s “high-value, low-impact” tourism policy, ensuring the protection of its environment, culture, and heritage while promoting sustainable economic growth.
As part of the current incentives effective from 1st September 2023 to 31st August 2027, US Dollar-paying tourists receive a 50% discount on the standard SDF of USD 200, reducing it to USD 100 per person per day. Children aged 6 to 12 years also receive a 50% discount, while a 24-hour SDF waiver continues for visitors staying in border towns.
The SDF plays a vital role in funding development programs, conserving natural resources, improving infrastructure, and creating opportunities for local communities, ensuring that tourism in Bhutan remains responsible, sustainable, and beneficial for future generations.
Visa Requirement
The Department of Immigration, under the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs, is the official authority responsible for issuing visas for Bhutan. Except for Indian nationals (who require permits), all international visitors must obtain a visa prior to travel.
Citizens of Bangladesh and the Maldives are eligible for a visa on arrival, while Swiss and Thai diplomatic or official passport holders may also receive visas on arrival at entry points. However, applying online in advance is recommended for faster processing. The visa fee is USD 40 per person (non-refundable), and processing usually takes up to five working days.
To apply, travelers must provide a valid passport (with at least six months validity), a recent passport-size photograph, and required travel details. Although travel insurance is no longer mandatory as of April 2024, it is still strongly recommended for safety and emergency coverage.
Bhutan is accessible by air through Paro International Airport via Drukair and Bhutan Airlines, connecting major cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Kathmandu, Bangkok, Dhaka, and Singapore. It can also be entered by road through four official border points in Phuentsholing, Gelephu, Samtse, and Samdrup Jongkhar.
Best Time to Visit Bhutan
The best time to visit Bhutan is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is pleasant, skies are clear, and temperatures are ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and vibrant valleys, while autumn offers stunning mountain views and colorful landscapes.
These seasons also coincide with major festivals such as Paro Tsechu and Thimphu Tsechu, giving visitors a chance to experience Bhutan’s rich cultural traditions and masked dances.
For those seeking fewer crowds and lower costs, winter (December to February) is also an option, offering crisp air, clear Himalayan views, and beautiful snowy scenery, though temperatures can be quite cold and some mountain passes may be affected by snow.
